The NDIS provider register lists 20,947 providers. It is 6,256 businesses.
We grouped every entry in the NDIS Commission’s register of registered providers by ABN. The register publishes 20,947 entries, and they belong to 6,256 businesses: about 3.3 entries each. A handful of businesses account for a large share of the whole.
How the entries are spread
Only 1,553 businesses appear exactly once. Most appear a few times, and 14 appear 100 times or more. Between them, those 14 hold 5,358 entries, or 26% of the register.
Why it happens
The repeats are not branches. Of the 19,394 entries that share an ABN with another entry, not one carries a street address. They are the service areas a business is registered for, published as one entry per area.
The clearest example: one business appears 791 times across 762 suburbs, and every one of those entries has the same phone number. That is one business covering many areas, not 791 locations.
Separately, 2,824 entries have their suburb withheld by the Commission and published as “CONFIDENTIAL”.
Why it matters
- A figure of “20,000+ NDIS providers” counts entries. Counted as businesses, the number is about a third of that.
- Market concentration looks different once you know 14 businesses hold 26% of the register.
- A participant searching a list built from the register can scroll past the same business many times without realising it is one organisation, which hides the smaller local providers.
Method and caveats
- Source: CareLocate’s import of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission’s register of registered providers, last imported 26 June 2026. Every entry from the register is counted, including ones CareLocate itself folds together on its own pages.
- A business is a distinct ABN. Grouping by ABN is our inference; the register does not assert it.
- This is our copy of the register, not an official Commission figure. The register changes over time.
- CareLocate is a provider directory, and counting businesses rather than entries is part of how it works. Read the framing with that in mind. The counts are the counts.
